Gratitude Makes a Difference

images (4)How can gratitude make a difference in your life? It might seem to you as though you have little to be grateful for. Being faced with a continuous onslaught of difficulties may cause you to be convinced there is little room for gratitude in your life. Nothing could be further from reality. The truth is, it is only when we are grateful that we invite more positives into our lives. I practice gratitude as a way of living. When I wake up each morning, I pause for a moment to take notice the things I am grateful for. Sometimes it’s as simple and as important as being grateful for a good night’s sleep. Sometimes it’s being grateful for the comfort of my bed, or the comfort of sleeping with my best friend, my husband.

But I don’t reserve gratitude for first thing in the morning. I pause throughout my day andimages (5) acknowledge the things that make life sweeter. I get ready for work, and as I’m preparing myself, I think about how thankful I am to have work that is meaningful. I leave my home, and I think about how grateful I am to have a home. I take a break at lunch time and I am thankful for my friend who just sent me a text message….for my simple lunch of a turkey sandwich…for cool the glass of water that I drink.  My friend jokes about being grateful foCoffee_Love.jpg.crop_displayr coffee. I know she is truly grateful for coffee…and so much more. I hear her talk about how grateful she is for her husband, her children and her grandchildren. Most people do have a lot to be grateful for.  I was talking to a homeless man once, and I asked him how he was doing. He answered me in a way that I will never forget. He said….”You might not think that I’m doing all that well, since I don’t have a house to live in. But you are wrong. The earth is my home, and I am grateful for her beauty and hospitality.”  He was a man who had literally nothing except the clothes on his back and what he could carry….and still he was grateful for what he had. Homeless_Man

When you are thinking negative thoughts, you invite negative energy into your life.  If you focus on what you don’t like about your life, you are giving your energy to the thing you want to avoid or change. But when you focus on what you are genuinely thankful for…you invite more positive energy into your life. Taking time to focus on what you are grateful for…having a gratitude practice, helps you to slow down and enjoy the sweet details of each moment.

I am grateful that the internet allows me to share these thoughts with you. I’m grateful that my computer works when I turn it on. I’m grateful that I have a computer; but even if I didn’t own my own, the public library has many which can be used by the general public. When I was coming in from work earlier today, I noticed a beautiful tree on my street, 2053301132_6749eadd4a_oregally clothed in rich hues of red and orange. I’m grateful for the colors of fall.

I’m grateful. My life is rich with color and closeness and love and laughter. I have my struggles, too. I’m also grateful for the challenges that I face at work and at home…because I know that they are opportunities for me to learn something important.
